My first travel post corona pandemic and my first experience in driving a four wheeler. Before this I had never drove a four wheeler independently for even a kilometer. Don’t know why I have decided that I will drive for 300kms on my own. This was probably because I had been doing long bike trips and I feel I have a sense of road discipline.
We are just coming out of a pandemic so thought of having a one day trip so that we don’t have to stay in a hotel and avoid eating out (we packed our breakfast and lunch from home). So we decided on Shivasamudram Falls and it was one of the few places open for public during early Sep-2020.
Barachukki and Gaganachukki Falls
Shivasamudram Falls is around 130 kms from Bangalore and the shortest route is through Kanakpura and Malavalli. Shivasamudram is a small island town formed between Kaveri river. It is surrounded by Kaveri river in all directions forming waterfalls in both the directions of the town. These twin falls are named as Barachukki and Gaganachukki Falls. Both these falls combined are called Shivasamudram Falls.
The eastern branch of the twin falls are called Barachukki Falls and the western branch are called Gaganachukki Falls. Most of the time we see Barachukki Falls in most of the pictures. There is a misconception that the left segment is called Gaganachukki and the right segment is called Barachukki in the same waterfall. But in reality Barachukki is a few kilometers away from Gaganachukki Falls.
Barachukki is the wider one among the twins with multiple segments spread across a wider area and Gaganachukki is taller. Gaganachukki has the height of about 98 meters while Barachukki at 69 meters. There are stairs built at both these falls for us to get the better view. The best time to visit this place is during monsoons or just after it (Best Months – July to October) when the falls will be in full flow.
Other places to visit in Shivanasamudra are Sri Ranganathaswamy and Someshwara Temples. More about it in my next post.
Other nearby are Talakad, Somnathpura and Bheemeshwari. We could not visit Somnathpura and Bheemeshwari. Bheemeshwari has adventure sports and it requires atleast 2 days to enjoy. Will post about these places later.
We did visit Talakad. It is a beautiful town on the banks of Kaveri and it has river beach. People from Bengaluru and Mysuru who stay far off from sea beaches visit this place for a day-out. We did not stay at this place for long because of huge crowds bathing in the river.
